They're among my favorite games, as you can guess from my reviews. The first three have definitely held up through the last year of play, while I haven't played Shadows enough to say the same.
Of those I'd suggest: get one of the TtRs, probably Europe because it's a bit better balance--unless you want to play with more casual gamers, in which case the original is a bit simpler.
Only get M'44 if you have someone to play two-player war games with you, but in that case, definitely do!
Wait on ShoC unless LotR is your favorite, because the two have somewhat similar styles of game play.

I've also hear good things about Carcassonne, Puerto Rico, A Game of Thrones (A Clash of Kings), Arkham Horror, Power Grid and War of the Ring among others. Your thoughts?

Generally:
Carcassonne is a great, light game, but I'd suggest any of the other variants as a first step into the Carcassonne pool. In order from lightest to heaviest, though they're all still pretty light: The Arc of the Covenant, Carcassonne: The Castle (2 player), Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers, Carcassonne: The City. They're all better balanced than the original game.
Puerto Rico is a medium-weight game, and it's really well done. I don't play this as often as I'd like, but this would be a desert island game for me because it has very high replayability.
I've never played the Clash of Thrones supplement, but it looked like a worthwhile collection of adds to Game of Thrones. I'd definitely use some of them.
I haven't played the new Arkham Horror yet.
Power Grid is a long, heavy game. If you're looking for something much more serious than the others you've played, this is a good choice.
I haven't played War of the Rings yet, but I hear great things about it. It's a medium to heavy two player war game.
If I could just buy three from your list, they would be, in order: Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride Europe and one of the Carcassonnes.
