I've also hear good things about Carcassonne, Puerto Rico, A Game of Thrones (A Clash of Kings), Arkham Horror, Power Grid and War of the Ring among others. Your thoughts?

I'm not Shannon, but I've playd a good chunk of these games:
Ticket to Ride & TtR: Europe. Great games, very fast to teach, set up, and play. This has become one of our primary games.
Memoir '44: this is a two player game only. I love it, yet its a little weird: set up *seems* to take as long as actually playing a game. Lots of old chip & CRT grognards hate this game, but its one my favorites: cards simulate the fog of war in some ways, and even when you ose, you still have a good time. Scenarios aren't balanced, but its suggested you switch sides after a game.
Shadows Over Camelot - this is a great game for playing before an rpg session. Set up, start playing, and as people drop in they pick up a character and go. The gameplay itself is fun and tense, although some people complain about a boring endgame. We still haven't been able to win the game frequently enough to say we're even close to mastering it.
Puerto Rico - Very different from the others. Fun, and lots of depth and strategy to it. So much so, that every time we play it, we just feel like we still haven't come to grips with the game in its entirety.
Game of Thrones - Great game, a potential problem with ships, but this game is great. Fun, intense endgame, lots of diplomacy, and very little random elements in the actual execution of orders. Needs 4-5 players to be really effective.
War of the Ring - Best as a two player game. Very complex. But I find it to also be one of my favorite games. Lots to keep track of, and usually a very suspenseful game.
To be honest, you can't go wrong with any of the above, and I'd urge you to consider eventually getting all of them, if the game concepts appeal to you.
