Yeah, I think that's something that is different about those old items... or maybe it's what's different about US.

Seriously, I'm not quite old enough to remember Blackmoor when it came out (I would have been in kindergarten then I think) but I remember getting the game in 1981 or thereabouts and--not really understanding much--getting an incredible sense of... possibility... wonder... amazement.
Sadly you get to be a child only once.
But I agree that back in the old days there was often a sense of humor and certain lack of general polishedness in the work that can be refereshing. The intentional retro look is certainly back in some circles, too. Heck, Erol Otus--he of mauve robes and funky lime green boots--did the art on a Goodman Games retro module.
