Hmmm, I'd say you could run a "fighters fight, MUs mu, etc." game quite well with quite a number of systems these days since to me a lot has to do with characters being suitably specialized into their niches along with a certain set of motivations. Castles and Crusades strikes me as the most obvious choice in this regard, being explicitly designed to do that sort of thing, but you could quite easily run 3.X in that fashion. Indeed I'd say that there was an intentionally retro aspect to 3E from day one when the authors said "go back to the dungeon."
