Re: [RPG]: DUNE: Chronicles of the Imperium, reviewed by Evan Waters (5/4)

Evan thanks for the review. Matthew thanks for working on the game. I feel kind of hypocritical making comments since I don't own the book. I have some questions about the core book as described in the review:

The Bene Gesserit as telepaths ? The only time the Sisters had telepathic contact was when a Reverend Mother died and another was close by to share her memories to add to the ancestral pool. Could the "Adept" model be used to create one of the Honored Matres of the post-scattering era or one of the "wild" reverend mothers (the Jewish ones)?

The book isn't a "toolkit" RPG but how easy would it be to create Fremen or Face Dancers and the like with the material in the book?

Equipment isn't mentioned in the review. Dune isn't science fiction that relies heavily on technology, but are stillsuits, shields, maula pistols, ect., ect. represented?

Could a GM model Dune itself as a roleplaying setting? Is there enough meat to the rules to do that?

I'm considering buying it the Dune RPG next time it comes up in an auction and running a game. Man, I wish there was a PDF somewhere.

There's been some good points brought up in this discussion and I would like to add:

Fading Suns is not Dune! It is a good RPG setting but it sure as hell isn't Herbert's Imperium. I'm surprised the Herbert estate hasn't gone after Holistic for what seems to be material that borders on plagarisim. People really need to quit comparing FS to the best literary setting in science fiction.

Arrakis should have gotten a whole chapter rather than a music planet. It seems like a given that the Fremen would be represented as a template. It's water under the bridge though. I don't think the designers had any idea that LUG would fold.

On the flip side, a lot of the post-Leto II books happened off of Dune. The first 4 FH originals did center on Arrakis though.

And it's a damn shame the line didn't continue. I have a promo brochure from LUG that outlines the initial planned supplements. They would have been really, really nice to own. Too bad WoTC got involved. We might not ever see a new Dune RPG.
