Not to say that your aesthetic dislike is, in some way, wrong, but The Shifted don't call themselves that. Nobody knows what they call themselves. They don't really communiciate in any reasonable way, shape, or form with humans. Only Simils deal with humans on a regular basis, and even they don't speak any human languages; the book isn't clear how they communicate, but from the description, it seems they use gestures.
