Either way, I think it's a bit silly to argue about science in Firefly, because that's not the point. Heck, I get the impression (from Mal's comment when he stepped onto Miranda's surface) that terraforming in Firefly also increases the gravity of these moons too somehow to Earth-normal, which you can't do unless you somehow add a hell of a lot of mass - by which I mean increase the mass of the moon about a hundred times. Unless somehow they're all earthsized already. That said, I guess Miranda may have been earthsized anyway, and an independent body around its primary too, since it appear to have a single moon.
It's clearly all done by black box ubertech magic that is strangely not present elsewhere in the setting. So I think it's best just to accept the structure of the 'verse as an axiom of the setting and not worry about whether it's realistic or how to make it so
