"Steal" is a bit harsh. It implies a lack of creativity and the hope that no one will notice. 
Items like the mentioned Anton Loveless are called "Easter Eggs," or when less direct, "homages." They're carefully picked, and the reader hopefully will notice. Sorry about your software. Most people's adobe reader should be able to pick it up. However, the art is available on our site at www.blackwyrm.com for perusal.
