Computer Game?

Ayrk,

while your review of Railroad Tycoon is very fitting, the genesis of this game is a tad more complicated.

The mechanics of Railroad Tycoon are closely based on Martin Wallace's train game Age of Steam. He streamlined it a bit, and Eagle Games gave it their usual Full Plastic Complement (tm).

The computer game Railroad Tycoon - at least the first version - is instead inspired by the board game 1830.

The economic models of 1830 and Age of Steam are very different from each other. When 1830 and oRT task you with handling a growing economy based on an already existing infrastructure, Age of Steam and new RT tell stories of the hunt for new possibilities you want to grab before your oppenents can do so.

So I would argue that the feel of these two families of games is rather different, despite their topic being the same.
