The mechanics of Railroad Tycoon are closely based on Martin Wallace's train game Age of Steam. He streamlined it a bit, and Eagle Games gave it their usual Full Plastic Complement (tm).

Baron, I agree with everything you say. I look at Railroad Tycoon as more of an entry game into the larger Train genre, so I tried to review from that point of view. I almost put the whole "Sid Meir's plays 1830, makes a computer game and later that game becomes a board game" thing in it, but decided it wasn't directly relevant.
