I'll be playing the game this weekend hopefully, but I'd say the first edition could be a "lite" version of this game. The FFG version is, what, ten or so times more complicated, with just as many pieces. I'm sure several loopholes have been fixed -- the Vampire doesn't accumulate strength EVERY turn (we had a 20 strength vampire at one time), monsters don't run around in circles, evasion seems less complicated, and the Find Gate spell is clarified (we used to use it *immediately* as soon as we entered a gate). Cards replace all tables, so you don't know as easily what you'll encounter at a location. Also, the "Gate appears" part of the game is a deck; you no longer have an idea what the most probable location of a gate appearing is. The skill check system isn't like first edition, iirc.
