That could be a problem. Shadowrun is a game about playing street operatives. Without knowing at least one person in advance, it's very possible that a shadowrunner hopeful won't even be able to survive for very long, let alone find work or decent gear. It takes an introduction from somebody on the inside of the business for the new kid in town to get into the local scene without something very big going his way. The old saying from SR1 is true: You are who you know.

Moreover, contacts are also sources of information. Without someone in the know to talk to about the corp you're running against, you literally have no idea what you'll be up against, or even what or who you're looking for, at times. What you don't know can hurt you. Sometimes you're lucky if that's all it does!

Right... but he'd better be very, very useful if they're going to let him sponge off of them for very long. Otherwise, he's out in the cold with nowhere to go, particularly if he has no lifestyle to fall back on. It's required, sure, but Street is also a lifestyle, and that's really no lifestyle at all. The nuyen you save isn't worth the danger of dying every time you doze off somewhere.
