Re: [RPG]: Dread, reviewed by jamesh (4/4)

I played in one of Woodelf's games at Con of the North this past weekend, and I played in one at last year's Con of the North. This year's wasn't as good as last year's, but both were great.

As others have said, the Jenga thing really helps to generate actual tension in the game. It's simply an amazing mechanic.

In last year's game, which was the "you're all going down the Grand Canyon in a raft, and there's something hunting you..." scenario, the climax of the game was when we were confronted face-to-face by the beast. The tower was getting pretty rickety, and we were all getting quite nervous. We had no idea whose characters were going to live. It ended when one player said something to the effect of "Ah, fuck it -- I'm attacking the beast head-on and throwing myself into its jaws!" and then he smashed the tower down. It was a perfect ending -- totally cathartic and dramatic. It was a relatively simple scenario, but it honestly felt a lot more frightening and tense than almost any horror movie I've seen.

I bought a copy of Dread, but forgot to ask Woodelf to sign it. Oh, well, I guess there's always next year...
