Absolutely, there's rewards outside of combat maneuverability. The AGL bonus to athletics skill affects swimming (if you don't have ath, you can't really even swim), climbing rolls, acrobatics and running (including sprinting, which I love).
So, that elven archer (if you're playing somewhere outside Eslin - we don't have elves
) won't be better at
shooting his bow, but he would be able to load it more quickly... and then run away more quickly when the warrior with the big pig-sticker was approaching him... or jump in the river and swim away.... you get the idea.
