Re: [RPG]: Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition, reviewed by James Gillen (4/4)
I would say overall that the reviewer only made two mistakes, and I took issue with one of his points:
1) Reference to the bell curve - and the subsequent misunderstanding on how Saves work. Automatic sucess and failure only operates on the to-hit.
2) Comparing the game to HERO System 5th Edition. If anything that game should have been compared to d20 Modern. First, because HERO is not a only a superhero game and, IMO, loses flavor and suffers for trying to be universal. And second, because M&M is not trying to be universal. M&M is a superhero game. Nothing more, nothing less. They are two different games entirely.
I thought the cost of the book comment was unwarranted. $39.95 is a reasonable price for a 256 page hardcover book by itself - the hardcover can add $10.00 to the retail price of a book alone. When you throw in full-color and high presentation you are more than getting your money's worth. By comparison I just paid $29.99 for Hero Games' Masterminds & Madmen which is 69 pages smaller, has black & white art on plain white paper, and is softcover. When comparing the two books I can easily see where my extra $10.00 went in M&M.
