You're right.

However I also don't find the issue of being cursed quite as bad as you do. It basically halves your chances of success, or your skill, depending on which way you cut it. Or, for rolls requiring just one success (e.g., most things other than monsters) it doubles the length of time it takes.

You can fight less tough monsters or engage in other activities just like to require one success, you can get money from other players to shop for them, etc. Travelling through Other Worlds to come back and close a gate might actually be one of the better options, if somewhat dangerous. Sometimes you can slide through the Other Worlds without rolls, and afterward just assume it takes you two turns to close the gate rather than one.
