Possibly inspired by Arthur Machen's "The Novel of The Black Seal," which featured nasty faeries. Lovecraft's admiration for Arthur Machen was far from hidden. Though faeries aren't specifically Lovecraft canon, most tales about the "little people" indicate they really have a mean streak. Faeries aren't like Tinkerbell or the guy on the box of Lucky Charms -- they're far more insidious and, in many cases, evil.

Take it for what it's worth, but well-played faeries can make for really f*cked up investigators before it's over and done.
