I don't think it had anything to do with making the game more "generic"; in 1989 the concept of a guy carrying around a gigantic computer that he plugs himself into was awesome. In 2006 everyone over the age of 14 has a cell phone the size of a pack of gum. It's really hard to suspend disbelief that in a world with cyberware and bioware, computers have actually quadrupled in size and wireless technology abandoned. Most of the technology from old school Shadowrun has already been eclipsed in the real world (in terms of technology, 1989 might as well be 1889). Stuff like changing "decker" to "hacker" re-orients an old setting into a feasable future reality; people can only suspend disbelief to a certain level, and stuff like cybered-up elves takes you pretty close to that level all by itself.

As for the slang, most of it has become played out. "Frag" has been a widely used term since Quake hit the PC gaming scene and "Drek" has become a cliche science fiction curseword.
