For general actions as well as magic, add together the appropriate Attribute and Skill to form the d6 pool which you then roll against a fixed difficulty, with 4 as "easy" and 16 as "unimaginable". Only the highest value rolled counts; but if it happens to be "6", you get to roll again and the new result is added to the total. Having the majority of dice end up as ones means a botch. There is also a slight bonus for those times when the attempted action falls within the character's particular "sphere of influence".
Note that for combat actions, you combine the appropriate Attribute and Skill, and add a single d6: no dice pools there.
