Got it covered. That was one of the big design concerns, and one of the reasons (among others) why we developed an alternate universe for the setting instead of just relying on classic noir. The idea is that there's something wrong with the universe - something intangible, but definitely felt by a tiny percentage of the populace - and that those who notice it just can't let it be. It's similar to the principle characters in the movie Dark City, who begin to realize that their world isn't what it appears to be. In The Edge of Midnight, they're called the Few, and their shared belief that, cosmically speaking, things ain't right, forms a connection that keeps them together. Among other things, it provides a justification for, say, a cop and a gangster to work together in the same party.
