Re: [RPG]: Call of Cthulhu, reviewed by Travire (5/5)

On the "psychoanalysis" thing, the APA does still use that term to refer to an accepted form of therapy. A lot of Freud's ideas have been made obsolete, but the general practice of lying down and talking things out is still considered legitimate, if not as effective as behavioral psychotherapy or medication for neurological conditions.

The review doesn't talk enough about the setting. BRP is a solid system, but it's how it ties into the atmosphere of the game that distinguishes CoC. The slow spiral towards insanity (or early retirement), the knowledge that you can't hold these things off forever, the not-always-subtle nihilism of the entire setting- it's something that was unprecedented in a medium that favored heroics and action, and to make it not just playable but enjoyable was CoC's real accomplishment.

Also, the "role playing"/"roll playing" bit is a cliche that's starting to grow mold.
