Re: [RPG]: Call of Cthulhu, reviewed by Travire (5/5)
I'm puzzled by the negative response some people give to reviews. When writing a review of a game like this its always going to be a personal opinion, but my aim was to give an overview for those who have not played Call of Cthulhu before.
If you concentrate too much on the rules people say you should have written more about the background setting. If you write a whole load about the setting people say you should have written more about the rules.
In the end if you don't agree with a review you are welcome to write your own about the game and present an alternate viewpoint. It takes more work to write a review of a game than pick holes in other peoples. Everyone is going to think one particular game is the best roleplaying game they have played, and if you write a review for it should you hold back from saying so ?
If I like a game that much I think it deserves maximum points then that is the reason for writing the review - to show how much I like that game. I'm not going to review every game ever written so I pick ones I think others might like to know about. I'm certainly interested in anyone elses reviews of games which score maximum points, even if I don't agree with them. If a reviewer gave 5 out of 5 for every new game to come out you might have reason to be sceptical.
I do appreciate positive feedback on a review, as to what you did or did not find useful. But some of the responses here are downright hostile, as though I'd written something offensive.
I hope that my review is informative enough for someone who did not know much about Call of Cthulhu to become interested enough to give the game a go. I'm not employed by Chaosium to try and sell this game, my review is a personal opinion based on more than 20 years of roleplaying experience. I stick to what I have said, Call of Cthulhu is the best roleplaying game ever, and apart from D&D I think it would be hard to put forward another contender for that title.
