Let me throw in a note of playtested support for Dan's comment about the various subsystems. I have played Burning Wheel at a convention with Luke running it. Since he knows the rules, it was a thing of beauty and a joy to have been a part of.
...but when our group tried to play the game we got bogged down. From character creation through to actual play, there were a lot of rule hesitations, referencing, frustrations and questions.
BW fans are many and vocal. If your group masters the system, and its subsystems, the game probably sings. But it's not a game for everyone.
