My first house rule is to have superstrength add 1 to the base weapon damage rather than increase the damage multiplier.
Massive damage really makes sense in combination with items. If you have a weapon attribute, you can generally get more damage for fewer points by buying another level of weapon (unless the GM is capping the levels). But if you are using an "off the shelf" item (sword, gun, etc.) then you can't do more damage unless you take massive damage. If you are playing Naruto for Final Fantasy, I don't see a need for massive damage, but if you are doing Cowboy Bebop or Gunsmith Cats or Patlabor, it works.
