Well there's an easy answer to that. The 1st edition Monster Manual has two types of "Ape", namely Ape (Gorilla) and Ape, Carnivorous (Giant), so the author was probably thinking of the AD&D giant carnivorous ape when they wrote that comment.

Or they were thinking of chimpanzees - those things can be nasty.
