That's not exactly what I dislike about 3rd edition's DMG section on treasure. I don't have anything against the XP/GP reward system itself, it's the way that the d20 system seems to me to want to straightjacket the DM into how much treasure/XP they should give the PCs for each session and encounter, and the same for how much gear NPCs should have. In 1st edition this seemed to be left more to the DM's taste and while it could have unfortunate consequences - i.e. excessively 'stingy' and 'monty haul' campaigns - it just seems more, ah, respectful of the gamers.
It's probably more to do with me not liking the feeling of being told what to do with "my" game, though.
