A rather strange (and nervous?) assumption to make!
The thing is, when I was ten years old and buying my Monster Manual at the local bookshop (which special ordered it for me) I was aware of how ugly the art was. Indeed, back in the day game art was almost notorious for being just pure garbage. Only a few early artists stood out in my opinion, like Erol Otus....not that he was a great artist, but he had a style that worked well within his artistic limitations.

On Hackmaster: I know some who swear up and down by it. It looks fun, liek AD&D 1.5....but it's farcial undertone is what keeps me away (and the fact that I am swamped with other systems I have no time to run, heh)
