I couldn't agree with you more.
Lev's review is absolutely fair in its way. Yes, the DMG was a random pile of ideas. Yes, it was totally inconsistent. Yes, it often focused on entirely the wrong issues.
But its disorganisation was compelling. I remember reading it for the first time, and it was like magic. The idea that the adventures you read in books could somehow come alive as a game was just wonderful, and the DMG's complexity and confusions just seemed part of the magic.
