As someone upthread said, sometimes liking a game (or book or movie) has little to do with the actual quality of the game.

For example, I have a considerable affection for Doctor Who, old series and new. The old series had laughable special effects, scientific blunders aplenty, and plot holes you could fly a Dalek armada through. The new series has better effects and a little more attention to characterization, but the weak science and convenient plot devices continue. But ... it's such a cool concept, and the lead actors (particularly the ten Doctors) really make the series worth watching.

Similarly, especially in the early years, the idea of roleplaying, of building a world and imagining yourself as a part of it, transcended the flaws of its first concrete implementation, D&D. Every DM will see something interesting in the DMG, or come up with his own riff on one of its ideas, because it's so large and diverse ... but compared to modern games it's badly organized, inconsistent, and surprisingly incomplete for many styles of play.

Luckily, these days, we can create the same or better experience with any number of game systems.
