You can call it if you like, but I was there and played it myself, so I would think that I might know the truth. The red box/blue book set that my mother bought me in 1975 or 1976 came with a sheet of numbered chits, in sets of 1-4, 1-6, 1-8, 1-10, and 1-20, along with a piece of paper that explained that TSR did not have a supplier for polyhedral dice, so you should cut out the chits and put them in different compartments of an egg carton, and then draw from the appropriate slot when you needed a random number. That's how we played D&D for the first year.

You're saying that polyhedral dice were existing. I'm not saying they didn't exist; I'm saying they were not included in red box/blue book sets of D&D published at some point in 1975 or 1976, and TSR's public reason was that they didn't have a supplier.
