I think that a certain assumed body-count is characteristic of the era. After all, assumed party sizes were 8-12 characters, plus an average of 4 henchpeople per character varying by charisma, plus hirelings and men-at-arms. You'd expect to lose some for a treasure haul of that magnitude.
This is a good point that might be hard for the younger set to relate to. Basically all of the early high-level adventures were meat grinders. Some got you with traps (S1); others lead to unavoidable combat deaths due to the large number of tough critters (G2,G3). It just wasn't that shocking to see a couple of dudes get wacked during a typical adventure.
