To complement both Jocelyn and Brad's answer, and to quote Corvus Kingsway himself as he spoke to his younger sister Lyra:
Forces are rising that do not bear the name Kingsway, and our end may be nearer than you think. Our family has lost much of its potency.
So short answer: yes, LSoE is all about the player characters!
However, as Jocelyn said, the road won't be easy or quick. Though Mastery ratings and Master Abilities do allow player characters to become mighty beyond anything this side of mortal, there is a little step that need be taken for them to tackle the Kingsways. Remember that the Kingsways have over 3000 years of immortality under their belt, dwarfing the oldest Angelion player character, at the character creation stage, by a factor of 10 to 1.
And the Kingsways are a clever bunch.
That being said, the purpose of the game is to see the player characters either supplant the Kingsways or align themselves with one or more of them, in either case leading the world and its people into the Third Age. The Third Age is all about the player characters, and the
Legendary Abilities hinted at in the core book will help ease the player characters into their place as the movers and shakers of the dawning Third Age. Legendary Abilities like
Art of War may turn a mighty warrior into the best the world has seen, while
Muse to the World may be used to sway the heart of Corvus or Delphina... The Kingsways are quite strong at first (in the years following the game's start, 2100SA), but they will pass the torch along to your player characters in due time. The big question then will be, what will your players do with it?
