I think the Earthdawn maps are deliberately vague, sketchy and somewhat innacurate to reflect the state of affairs in Barsaive after the Scourge.

The lay of the land has in many ways changed dramatically compared to the maps available to the people of Barsaive from those records that have survived during the Scourge.

The big poster map you got with the old Barsaive boxed set was a great deal clearer regarding stuff like rivers and their origins in mountain ranges.
