Re: [RPG]: Deities & Demigods, reviewed by Lev Lafayette (5/1)
Folks, this book was written YEARS ago. The game was very different back then. If you didn't understand how to use it or why it was neat at the time, in today's light it's simply going to blow.
Those Gods helped tie the game into all kinds of mythos, providing a rich tapestry that would not have been clear at the time if they had not been published as such. As well, it was more about war gaming and less about culture, and the whole accuracy versus fantasy argument was only just starting. There was also no political correctness. Hell, kids and college students barely had an idea of what anthropology even was back then. There was no GLUT of PHD's in that field yet.
The Gods were a first attempt. In truth, Robert Kuntz's conception of Gods in his campaign is nowhere near related to the Dieties and Demi-Gods product that he had moved far beyond by the time it was converted into First Edition AD&D.
It almost makes NO sense reviewing something this old.
By the way, I used the book as a judge all the time. It was easy to extend what was in the descriptions into ways clerics of those Gods might act. Today's supplements prescribe entire heirarchies, which I think is very limiting.
