I recently finished the Battle Royale manga, which Classroom Deathmatch is heavily and openly based on. There are entire issues showing the family of the girl who falls from the lighthouse; entire issues of the main character struggling with the choice to kill; entire issues showing how the heartless murdering bastard got so screwed up as a kid.
It's about the damage caused by violence, the effect it has on people, the dangers of a totalitarian government, the way normal children react to a horrific situation.
I'm not denying that the violence in BR has contributed to its popular appeal. But it's always been a warning against violence and voyeurism in the media, not a celebration of it.
