I would like to start out by stating that there was clear intent by the authors that there is no magic in this game. There are spirits, alchemy, undead, and the like, but they are presented as science, not magic. They are governed by laws which can be empirically determined and the results of experimentations into such are repeatable.
There was an entire chapter on the things you mentioned which was cut from the book due to length. It is forming the basis of the second book which is being worked on now.
