Not everyone has enough time or imagination to come up with their own setting. The default setting is for those who want one. Those who don't can ignore it. It's better to have something you don't need than to need something you don't have.

I *would* like to know more *about* this default setting. Will there be descriptions of specific locations, or is it just general background cultural information like the Greyhawk stuff in 3e? And can someone explain the concept of "world zones"? Is that just a new name for the planes?
