Interesting. Are there some reviews, in particular, that you think lack commentary or insight into a product? I've heard this said before, too, but I've yet to meet anyone who can point to more than the rare review.
I think that there's plenty of room to describe specific elements of a product while still maintaining the level of criticism you're striving for. In general, I tend to assume that one of the major reasons folk read reviews is to be informed.

That's an interesting thought, but a bad review could also trigger debate. Indeed, the reviews I've written that folk have objected to most have also been accompanied with a lot of discussion and debate. I'm just not sure that discussion, especially when it centers around such a controversial product, is indicative of a good review.
