We never intended to do the Monstrous Edition- from the start, the original was written and published in good faith. We had so much positive feedback (and the general comment that more would be better) that we worked up the new edition and tried to add as much new coolness that it wouldn't seem like a rehash, but rather an all-around improvement. Everyone who worked on it was pretty excited and motivated, so we got the new edition done really fast. We had it in the can, and it seemed sort of uncool to wait a year and sit on it for the buzz on the first edition to die.
The way Monsters evolved from a larky "Hey Shane, how about this thing for a one-off online freebie" to a real Arc Dream gameline was entirely organic. All the pieces lined up, and so it became what it is now.
The new edition doesn't invalidate the previous one- the mechanical changes are more tweaks and clarifications than anything, as well as some fixes and edits based on player comments and errata. The
Monstrous edition is, IMHO, in every way possible, better, but it need not supersede the earlier one.
And I promise- that's the last edition we'll be putting out for a good while... we've go so many cool things lined up for the line, that we have plenty else to work on.
