The game takes place in 1689, with an altered view of history. It's a history in which magic was/is real. So, for example, Cortes did not conquer the Aztecs and the Aztec Empire is still alive and well. Also, the Church actually sanctions some mages because mages serve in royal courts and things like that.
At the same time, you still have nods to history like Jamestown, the Fire of London, things like that.
