Re: [RPG]: Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook: 4th Edition, reviewed by Chris Davie

I have to say, even though this wasn't the most informative review ever, I wonder about the motivations of some of these posters because of the uterly spurious complaints.

"You didn't play the game". It's called a capsule review. There are also playtest reviews. Capsule reviews are a well-supported RPG.net review type.

"You didn't read all of the books." Again, this is a review of a specific product. Sure, reading every book in a game line gives you additional insight and wisdom with which to sprinkle your reviews, but the review headline specifically says "Player's Handbook," not "review of 4e in general," "review of RPGs in general," or "review of your life choices in general."

And the fact is, no one levies any of these charges at other capsule reviews of single books, except in the case of D&D 4e, which raises everyone's blood pressure so much that they just have to fight over everything regardless of pretext.
