Re: [RPG]: Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition Player's Handbook, reviewed by Al Seeger (4
First, I enjoyed your review. It seems par for the course if you write a review slamming 4e, you're going to get flamed like there's something wrong with not liking the new design choices.
Your basic conclusion that this is a different game, more than a refinement, is a theme I see over and over again in reviews. That's an important concept for game consumers, because if you like 3e, then you may be disappointed with 4e when you realize it's not an extension, but a replacement. Of course, if you don't like 3e, 4e may be a breath of fresh air.
I have a question for the crowd, though, about one change that bothers me. I really liked multiclassing as presented in 3e. Finally, for the first time, you can create any kind of character you like by simply mixing different classes. Elric becomes possible, and so does Conan, and just about anything else you want. It was a brilliant idea.
So 4e does away with that. I doubt anyone out there has played 4e enough yet to know if they miss that aspect, but if you've at least made a character and gone on an adventure or two, I'm wondering if that's an element you miss, or does it go unnoticed thanks to the paragon paths.
