But Conan does not have this ability, not in your example. If he had this ability he would not need to be guided by the Old One. And he would know what he was doing. In your example he just follows mechanicaly instructions he does not understand. He will be in no position to replicate the act in other situations. So he does not have an ability of his own to do sorcereous acts. By your own standards Conan is not a sorcerer in any sense of the word.
No. Your first expression is much better, he "engages" in sorcerous activity. He is "engaged" to sorcery, he is not "wedded" to it.
