I, on the other hand, absolutely loved the setting chapter
as well as how it was written in a very impressive "neo-Victorian" writing style, so I could not disagree more to your sentiment "I would love to see more focused writing that narrows in on the most interesting subjects while leaving some of the historical minutiae aside."

I flipped through some of the existing Dread Unrated reviews, and I think I have a vague idea of what you're referring to here.
Personally, I'm not ready to draw the conclusion a rpg can't get an above-average score unless it includes "solutions" to how you should game it faster, but that is just my own mileage... And besides, the kind of support which means a "focused" game (Dread -> action, Gumshoe -> investigation) is not what I need personally.
But thanks for replying - I now have a much better idea of where your low score comes from!
