IMO, a heartbreaker (like someone else said) tries to 'fix' something in D&D or replace D&D with something better. I don't feel that Desolation even comes close to trying to do this. It is a unique idea AFAIK, post apocalyptic fantasy set right after the apocalypse.
As to the mechanics there are some great reviews around here of the Ubiquity system as found in Hollow Earth Expedition. I also cover the mechanic in my review of Desolation. The points are used for initial character gen stats and skills.
I am not a
big fan of the Ubiquity system and I really don't like the fact that the starting points are used differently than advancement points but that is kinda' common in RPG's so it's not a deal breaker.
My suggestion is that you read some of the sample material on the
http://www.desolationrpg.com/Desolation web site and decide for yourself if the writing is something you enjoy or not, instead of trusting in reviews that may or may not cover the aspects of the game that you want to know about.
