Here's a true story about Hero Quest (the old board game, not the roleplaying game). I was working at an art magazine a couple of years ago, and we were at our editor's home. Turns out her son had an old Hero Quest game. I had fond memories of playing it ten years earlier so I suggested we played it.
None of the other people present had played anything like it before, nor any role playing games. One of our journalists was chosen to be the "evil lord". He immediately started roleplaying, using the rules, of course, but also adding little motivations and things, we would find dying goblins in corridors that with their last breath gasped secret hints for what to come.
He really brought us into that dinky toy world and made the monsters and setting come alive.
