This game certainly seems to capture the single most important element of "old school" D&D... the notion that the rules were a starting point, and that everybody would fiddle with them.
Before D&D was published, some of us ran our own games using numbers derived from Chainmail also. Things not in Chainmail were derived by the highly scientific "Extractibus ex recto meum" method. Also known as "We made up some shit that we thought would be fun".
