This debate reminds me of discussions in... Dragon magazine I think. Back when 2E was still the thing, in which some players complained about how they didn't like 'excessive roleplaying'. 'Excessive' was when the players were not 'doing something'. And 'doing something' was defined pretty much as 'killing monsters and taking their stuff'.
So yes, there is a school of people who feel D & D should be about that more than anything else. Does this new edition actually cater only to that crowd?
