I just tried to open Exalted on another system, using a copy of Adobe Acrobat activated to the same Passport acocunt.
It still had to go to rpgnow.com to verify I was allowed to read the file. (Exact phrasing: "Please click OK to be taken to a website where you can obtain permisison to open the document")
DTRPG is currently so slow that the activation can't be done. However this tells me that drivethrurpg.com *IS* needed to view a file on a different system. The poster who said earlier that drivethrurpg.com had nothing to do with getting permission to read the document after purchase, and that this was handled by Adobe, must be wrong.
So if (when?) DTRPG dies my documents can *never* be moved to a new destination withourt resorting to cracking the DRM protections.
And on a bit of a tangent:
What fool decided to place the download server, the webserver and the DRM activation server on the one machine? If they had split these functions up we'd be able to browse the website and activate our documents even when teh download server is being hammered.
