[RPG]: Proverbial Monsters, reviewed by Darren MacLennan (2/2)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/14/14572.phtml

Darren MacLennan's Summary:

It's either the most bizarre World of Darkness supplement ever written, or a middling Shadowrun bestiary.

Conceptually it sounds like it would have been a great supplement for WoD Innocents where kids might actually believe some of those superstitions.

I love the above line with all my heart.

It also sounds like a great supplement for Changling the Dreaming but I agree with Darren, it's definitely completely out of place in any other WoD game especially nWoD, though it would make a great source of delusions for a Malkavian character.

Am I a bad person for wanting to force Darren to review lots and lots of really bad rpg games and supplements just so that I can read more reviews like this one?

...'cuz it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Re: [RPG]: Proverbial Monsters, reviewed by Darren MacLennan (2/2)

I picked this up recently. Wish I'd read the review beforehand. I'm normally very happy with most white wolf publications, but this didn't seem to fit with that.

All the monsters work on the same dynamic, which is shown in this review. Pretty much you violate the superstition, then they attack you physically.

The one that was any use was the mirae, a creature that emerges from broken mirrors. I used that in a Changeling the Lost game to fill in an inspiration gap, and it was OK... not stand out (like some of the hobgoblins and the like in Autumn nightmares, Dancers in the Dusk, and Goblin Markets). I bought this because I really liked the core idea, of superstitions having some purchase on reality. It really fits with Changeling (and the book acknowleges that it's more suited to Changeling than Vampire). It was the repetative, simple execution that was a let down.

Also, something not picked up in the review was that it felt like it was written for the old World of Darkness - there's a couple of mentions of damage being soakable. There's no soak mechanic in the NWOD. This sort of thing would be understandable towards the start of the NWOD, when writers were getting their heads around the changes between the two systems. But it's been out for a while now.

Re: [RPG]: Proverbial Monsters, reviewed by Darren MacLennan (2/2)

In absolute fairness to the supplement, two responders to this review have mentioned that it seems to sound good for Changeling or Innocents.

The intro to the product itself states directly that thematically it works best with these two products and Hunter (which with its world spanning conspiracies doesn''t have to be as localised as the average Vampire or Werewolf game), so there's an argument that the author found the mark that she's aiming for.
